When the butler reached his side, he bent over and asked, ”How's Emily been recently?”

The butler looked over at Emily and shook his head. ”Mrs. Gu has been fretting since you didn't come home at night, so I'm afraid she wants to beat you!”

Jacob's heart secretly quaked, but he did not let the butler see any signs of discomfort on his face. He straightened up and cleared his throat. ”Clear the room!”

Besides, even if he were to suffer a beating, he would do so in silence and in secret. After all, he was the head of the family.

After the staff cleared the room, Jacob went to Emily, squatted down, and took a hold of her cold little hand. ”Why didn't you go to your room to rest?”

Emily's eyes were hollow from fatigue, but when she heard Jacob's voice, she turned to him as if she had suddenly found life again. She opened her mouth but quickly closed it again as she didn't know what to say.

Finally, she had to speak, and she questioned Jacob in a soft tone, ”You haven't come back home to sleep for two days. Where have you been?”
