The American Booksellers a.s.sociation and twenty-six independent bookstores filed a suit in March 1998 against Borders and Barnes & n.o.ble charging that the two largest players in U.S. bookselling used their size to extract ”secret and illegal” deals from publishers, making it difficult for independent book retailers to compete.
