The chief beckoned to A Miao and said, ”Come here.”
”Chief A Ka!” Xu Shiguang shouted, ”Didn't you want to build roads to your village? This man can help you if you are able to kill the vermin.”
Chief A Ka turned to Shen Xinglan in surprise and asked, ”May I have your name?”
”Shen Xinglan,” he answered solemnly. ”You can ask for anything as long as you can save my wife.”
Chief A Ka was very excited. After all, their village was in a remote mountainous area with bumpy roads. During the rainy season, floods would strike this region, so they could not go out for as much as a few months.
”Can you help us build roads?”
”Yes.”
”What about a dam?”
Shen Xinglan walked up to A Miao, supporting her by the arm, and then said, ”I will do anything as long as you can kill the vermin.”
”OK!” Chief A Ka stood up and said, ”Wait a minute!”
She staggered into the bamboo cottage excitedly. After a while, she returned back unsteadily with a black pottery jar in her hand.
”Put your hands on the table!” Chief A Ka said to A Miao, then added, ”Ah, close your eyes if you're frightened.”
A Miao draw back her hands immediately.
Holding her by the arm, Shen Xinglan asked, ”Is that dangerous, Chief A Ka?”
”No, no, no,” Chief A Ka shook her head and answered, ”Girls may be scared when seeing this.” Then she patted the jar and said, ”First, I need to make sure if the vermin is in her body.”
Holding A Miao's hands, Shen Xinglan touched the table along with her and pressed her head against his shoulder, then said, ”You can close your eyes. I will look at it.”
”Ready?” Chief A Ka unsealed the jar after A Miao had closed her eyes.
A burst of creepy rustling sounds was heard. Two antennas came out from the jar, followed by an ugly head.
The insect was similar to a centipede with sharp barbs in its big mouth area. As the sound of rustling grew louder, it totally climbed out, like a big mutated centipede.
”What is this?” Shen I glanced at it from afar and asked with disgust.
Little Demon gave him a supercilious look and answered, ”What could it be besides a centipede? It has so many legs!”
”There is no centipede like that!”
Although it was similar to a centipede, it was very colorful. But for its ugly appearance, it would be more amazing.
”Freeze!” Chief A Ka said.
The insect crawled around the table, suddenly standing up with its front section, countless legs twitching, then moved toward Shen Xinglan.
Chief A Ka put the insect in the jar right away.
There was a loud rustling noise in the jar, seeming as if the insect was struggling to get out.
”Everything is okay.” Shen Xinglan kissed A Miao to comfort her.
A Miao turned her head to take a look after figuring out it was an insect from the rustling sound.
It was a full five minutes before the insect calmed down. Chief A Ka capped the jar and set it aside.
”Vermin.”
A Miao's heart sank, even though she has already anticipated this result.
Shen Xinglan gently stroked her back, looking down and smiling, then asked, ”Can you deal with it?”
”I need to seek the solution in my grandmother's relics,” Chief A Ka answered with embarrassment. ”Sorry for not believing you. Mr. Xu was certain that it was a vermin, so I had to let you come here.”
Chief A Ka did not believe that there was a vermin in A Miao's body until this moment.
”My grandmother was the last vermin cultivator in the stockaded village,” she said with sadness, ”but it was not allowed. What's more, the vermin fed on blood and flesh, which most children could not stand.”
Even Chief A Ka herself had not seen a vermin for a long time.
”What is the insect in that jar?” Ouyang Jin asked.
Chief A Ka looked at that jar and answered, ”It is a kind of worm raised by my grandma, and it usually feeds on leaves. It will move restlessly when it gets close to vermin for vermin is its favorite food.”
Ouyang Jin forced a smile and thought the insect looked like a vermin, but actually, it was a vegetarian.
”Please stay here longer. I will find a way to catch the vermin in this lady's body as soon as possible.”
Everyone looked at Shen Xinglan. He nodded and said, ”OK, but I need to set a deadline. If you can't solve it in three days, the deal between us will be void.”
