Chapter 25 - Abandoned Hospital (9) (1/2)
Cheng Zhi Chu held the bear and watched it cling onto his finger while softly calling him “mummy”. His expression was like he was thunderstruck and for a long time he couldn’t speak.
“You………”
After a while, he managed to find his voice but there was still a hint of a tremble in it: “You can talk?”
And it had also called him “mummy” ………. That itself is not a problem but why is it calling Bai Yi “daddy”?! This can easily lead to misunderstandings okay……?!
The bear blinked a few times and let out a soft whine. It nodded its head but this time it didn’t speak. It seems like it couldn’t speak very fluently. It may even have some sort of restrictions to it only allowing it to speak in special circumstances.
“Ah……..That’s great. You’re so clever.”
Cheng Zhi Chu awkwardly praised it. He looked up and saw the small smile on Bai Yi’s face. He looked seemingly pleased by the bear. Seeing that smile, he couldn’t help but feel his face warm up.
Fortunately, Bai Yi isn’t angry……. Anyway, even if he hates gays, he wasn’t someone that would go out of his way to get angry at a clueless bear. But it’s still so awkward……. This won’t do. He must quickly correct Pinecone. He can’t let it continue calling them those names.
“You can call me by my name or “master”. If you really can’t then you can call me “daddy.”” Cheng Zhi Chu cleared his throat and spoke to the bear seriously. “As for that person, you can call him “Uncle Bai”.”
“………” The bear looked at them for a moment like it seemingly understood his words and then it quickly turned over to Cheng Zhi Chu and called out, “Mummy!”
Cheng Zhi Chu: “……..”
Cheng Zhi Chu: “……..No. Call me daddy.”
Bear: “Mummy! Mummy!”
Cheng Zhi Chu: “Pinecone, listen to me. Call me daddy!”
Bear: “Mummy~”
Cheng Zhi Chu: “…….” Why does it sound more and more wrong the more it says it??
He threatened the bear: “No. It’s daddy, not mummy. If you continue to say the wrong thing daddy will…..daddy won’t buy you fried chicken!”
The bear immediately looked over at Bai Yi with teary eyes. It pleaded: “Daddy, I want to eat fried chicken…….”
Cheng Zhi Chu: “……….” Fuck. Why won’t it correct itself? They didn’t mention anything like this in the side effects!
“Be good. You’ll get them.”
The handsome man raised the corner of his lips and smiled at the bear and Cheng Zhi Chu. It was warm and gentle like the spring breeze, completely opposite to his previously cold and dark look.
“……..Forget it. Let’s just leave it.”
Cheng Zhi Chu supported his forehead and gave up correcting the bear.
Seeing that it couldn’t be corrected now, it looks like he would need to wait until later. Anyway, as long as Bai Yi isn’t angered, nothing else mattered.
However, he couldn’t help but find it strange. The bear seemed to be somewhat afraid of Bai Yi. He suddenly recalled the bear telling Bai Yi to “not kill it”. Why would it think that Bai Yi would want to kill it?
He couldn’t help but ask the bear: “Are you afraid of Bai Yi? Why? Is he very scary?”
“Wu……….”
The bear trembled and it quietly glanced over at Bai Yi. Bai Yi responded to it with a smile. It suddenly shook its tail and thought for a while before explaining weakly.
“Earlier scared……be-because it is said that fathers are strict, and mothers are kind so I thought that daddy would be very fierce………”
Cheng Zhi Chu: “……….” Ok, he understands. He shouldn’t have asked that question.
“……….”
Ji Yun Xiao pursed his lips and watched the scene unfold before him. After a moment, he wordlessly walked over to the incomplete corpse of the man-eating monster and picked up the key from one of its limbs.
Da Gao’s body laid to one side of it. His blood had cooled down and it had dried into a dark red stain. Ji Yun Xiao looked at it for a while with red eyes and a few drops of tears fell silently. With his fingers trembling slightly, he reached out to take off Da Gao’s bloody tie and he silently stored it away.
“Xiao Xiao….”
The Meng sisters watched on in distress, but they didn’t know what they should do to comfort him. Cheng Zhi Chu’s mood also became heavy. Ji Yun Xiao quickly wiped away his tears and stood back up again.
He gave Da Gao one final look and gave him a deep bow. He then turned around and gave the others a faint smile. With a low voice that was a little hoarse he said: “……….Let’s go.”
The Meng sisters and Cheng Zhi Chu were all a little depressed and sad. Only Bai Yi remained calm. There was even a small hint of darkness in his eyes as his gaze briefly swept over Ji Yun Xiao before he moved to walk out the room.
The others restored their moods and similarly left the bathroom after him. They headed over to the mortuary that was pointed out by the clues which, at the same time, lead them to the underground passage joining the outpatient and inpatient departments.
The bear climbed into Cheng Zhi Chu’s shirt pocket and only revealed its small head. With its small round eyes, it glanced around as they walked while smacking its lips seemingly like it had not eaten its fill yet and was looking around for more food.
Cheng Zhi Chu still faintly remembered the way to the mortuary. They returned to the first floor and found the door leading underground. The entrance to the underground passage was very concealed and required taking two turns down the staircase to find it. Perhaps it was deliberately done so to avoid others from finding it and getting scared.
After going down about a floor’s depth, a hard and thick steel door stood before them. The silver stainless steel plate reflected the light from their flashlights causing a pale white reflection. From the door you could feel a faint chill emanating.
“This place………seems a bit cold.”
Meng Xin rubbed her arms and felt a little chilly. Perhaps it was because it is underground, so the temperature was a bit lower but in this eerily dark environment, it felt particularly cold.
Before Ji Yun Xiao inserted the key, Cheng Zhi Chu suddenly remembered the ghost stories that he had heard before. His expression changed slightly, and he spoke up to remind them.
“Be careful after you go in. There might be something here………the ‘red clothed female corpse’.”
Cheng Zhi Chu did his best to recall the information that the system had given him and said:
“When I was hospitalised, I heard about some ghost stories that was circulating around the hospital. The one earlier was the ‘man-eating monster in the sewer’ and there was another two which was the ‘red clothed female corpse in the mortuary’ and ‘the invisible ninth floor of the inpatient department’.”
The two sisters heard this and nodded nervously while tightening their grips around the weapons in their hands. Bai Yi stood behind them assessing the door. Not knowing what came across his mind, he revealed a small smile that had a hint of coldness within.
Ji Yun Xiao inserted the key and turned the lock. With a bit of strength, he pulled open the thick and heavy door and it let out a loud dull sound.
“Groan………”
Strange air surged out from the inside. A cold and musky air that had a strange smell to it rushed out. It was like the smell of something slowly decaying causing many of them to retch in disgust.
“Pa———-pa, pa………”
The moment the door opened, something very strange happened.
The lights in the underground passage lit up one after another. In the narrow passage, darkness gradually disappeared and pale light reflected off the smooth concrete floor as well as the cabinets on both sides.
Sitting on both sides of the walls were rows of freezer cabinets used to store dead bodies. The cabinets reflected a cold metallic lustre, and most of the doors were closed. Several of them were opened and the cabinets were half pulled out and suspended in mid-air.
This kind of setting made Cheng Zhi Chu feel uncomfortable. He looked over at the rows of cabinets and couldn’t help but feel like there was something hiding inside waiting to jump out the moment they approached it.
If he could. Cheng Zhi Chu really didn’t want to get close to those freezers, but he also knows that it was impossible to avoid it.
