103 Who’s being sold? (2/2)
”You thought I was selling you?” Han Feng asked coldly, and his face was a blank mask.
”Father I--” Han Mei began.
”You thought I was selling you? Any of you?” He asked again before Han Feng shook his head, his expression aggrieved, ”You are both my daughters, my family, and you thought I was selling you? Mei'er, how many years have you worked under your cousin?” Han Feng but put in barely controlled fury.
”Ten years.” Han Mei replied, her head bowed, voice small.
'I'm sorry, father… I did not mean to hurt you…' She thought to herself as she held back her tears. Han Mei was sure that he, her father, is disappointed. She could not blame him as she was disappointed with herself as well.
”Ten years,” Han Feng echoed before he nodded. ”Ten years, you worked under your cousin. Since you were sixteen. You were everything your mother was. You were brilliant as well. But always been more naïve. When I gave you the chance to work with your cousin, after two years, what happened?” Han Feng asked, sounding more tired.
”I trusted the wrong person,” Han Mei gritted out. She was also ashamed to have her dirty laundry being aired. That happened years ago, but it was not completely solved yet. She wanted to rebut that she was smarter now, but could not do so.
”You trusted the wrong person. Good. Now, do you remember what you told me you would do?” Han Feng asked, leaning back against the sofa, his back a little hunched.
”I said I'll fix it,” Han Mei said blandly, still not looking at her father.
”You said you'll fix it. Good. You remember. You said you'd fix, and when things got worse, you disappeared without a trace and left us floundering. The deal with Suzuki Kyou had been for him to help us with you to assist him and to learn from him. He brought in marriage for reasons I do not comprehend. Do you know? While you were away, your friend got greedy, and now we're reeling, barely holding to the company. Now tell me, daughter, who sold who?” Han Feng asked quietly.
His words had not been loud or harsh, but every word had flayed Han Mei open, leaving her feeling vulnerable and sad.
”I'm sorry, father. I didn't mean to cause so much trouble.” Han Mei said, barely getting the words out around her sobs.
”I know you don't want to. But we are already at this point. There is no turning back.” Han Feng said, sinking weakly into the couch. ”Probably the Suzuki Family allowed the marriage as an assurance that their investment won't go to waste…” He added softly.
”Maybe you should rest, sir, let your nephew take care of everything else.” Bai Min said, moving to help Han Feng. Jonah held him back and shook his head.
The message was clear, and Jonah was going to help Han Feng while Bai Min stayed back to help the clearly shocked and grief-stricken sisters.
”Yes, yes, I'll do just that.” Han Feng said, standing slowly. Jonah rushed to his aid and led him out of the living room.
Bai Min sat down heavily beside Han Jun and looked at the crying sisters. Han Jie had been crying quietly since her sister's little speech about being sold. She felt somehow the same way. Aside from that, she was surprised by the new information that it was Suzuki Kyou who asked for the marriage.
”Stop crying now, JieJie. I will be alright…” Han Mei softly spoke as she pats Han Jie's head like consoling a child.
