254 6.48 The Continuation Of The Mutilation Of The Treaty. (1/2)
The moment I announced it was time for recess, the 'aunties' together with some supervisors and assistants brought in the late breakfast and tea breaks in and set up a table near the entrance of the building.
There was steamed tomato rice; the kind where you used the tomato juices in place of the water and it made the rice rather reddish-orange in colour. Also, we had chicken in green curry with potatoes and some stir-fried mustard. The breakfast was simple, yet it looked like lunch and was served with a dessert made of mango pudding with nata de coco.
”Is this breakfast or lunch?” I whispered to one of the 'aunties' and she said it was lunch. Breakfast was over hours ago and I laughed out loud, thinking that I had spoken too much during the initial meeting that I had forgotten that everyone hadn't had their breakfast yet.
As lunch was served, I announced, ”A thousand apologies my dear friends, it seems I had spoken too much and no one stopped me. Please enjoy our brunch and dessert, our fine chefs here would be firing up their woks soon if they find that we need more than usual.”
Actually, there's only 19 of us and the servings were meant for 30. There's a lot of space for seconds as well as thirds and the supervisors of the plant acted as banquet servers to serve us. Everyone complimented on the food and the only thing that was missing was 'achar', side pickle dish made of pineapple, bell peppers, cucumber, tomatoes and some chillies prepared in vinegar or lime juice to compliment with the green curry.
It is alright, no one notices the missing 'achar' and His Majesty even took seconds for his rice and green curry. He loved having his meals here and decided to be making Fukushima as one of his stopovers when he made rotational visits to Shibata, Ibaraki, Chiba and Tokyo.
After everyone had their meals and taken through a portion of desserts and teas with them, the banquet was quickly dismantled and returned back to the 'aunties' and its time to proceed with the second portion of the meeting.
”ARTICLE VIII. Americans in Japan shall be allowed the free exercise of their religion, and for this purpose shall have the right to erect suitable places of worship. No injury shall be done to such buildings, nor any insult be offered to the religious worship of the Americans.”
”American citizens shall not injure any Japanese temple or shrine, or offer any insult or injury to Japanese religious ceremonies, or to the objects of their worship.”
”This part seems barbaric. Please rephrase.” I cancelled the whole portion and wrote 'REPHRASE IN GENTLER TERMS'.
Hiko-sama who had just returned back to the conference building stood behind me and rubbed my shoulders, like a boxer who had just entered the ring. Hahahahaha. ”Round Two... ” Hiko-sama commented to me as he took his seat next to me on the left.
”The Americans and Japanese shall not do anything that may be calculated to excite religious animosity. The Government of Japan has already abolished the practice of trampling on religious emblems.”
