AS-CENDENS. [L.] Ascending; rising.

AS-PHYXI-A. [Gr. +a+, _a_, not, and +sphyxis+, _sphyxis_, pulse.]

Originally, want of pulse; now used for suspended respiration, or apparent death.

AS-TRAGA-LUS. [Gr.] The name of a bone of the foot. One of the tarsal bones.

AUD-ITION. [L. _audio_, to hear.] Hearing.

AUD-IT-ORI-US. [L.] Pertaining to the organ of hearing.

AURI-CLE. [L. _auricula_, the external ear; from _auris_, the ear.] A cavity of the heart.

AU-RICU-LAR. [L. _auricula_.] Pertaining to the auricle.

AX-ILLA. [L.] The armpit.

AXIL-LA-RY. Belonging or relating to the armpit.

A-ZOTE. [Gr. +a+, _a_, not, and +z+, _zo_, life.] Nitrogen. One of the const.i.tuent elements of the atmosphere. So named because it will not sustain life.

BEN-ZOIC. _Benzoic acid._ A peculiar vegetable acid, obtained from benzoin and some other balsams.

BICEPS. [L. _bis_, twice, and _caput_, a head.] A name applied to muscles with two heads at one extremity.

BI-CUSPIDS. [L. _bis_ and _cuspis_, a point.] Teeth that have two points upon their crown.

BILE. [L. _bilis_.] A yellow, viscid fluid secreted by the liver.

BI-PENNI-FORM. [L. _bis_ and _penna_, a feather.] _Bipenniform muscle._ Having fibres on each side of a common tendon.

BRACHI-AL. [L. _brachium_.] Belonging to the arm.

BREVIS. [L.] _Brevis_, short; _brevior_, shorter.

BRONCHI-A, -. [L.] A division of the trachea that pa.s.ses to the lungs.

BRONCHI-AL. Relating to the bronchia.

BRONCH-ITIS. [L.] An inflammation of the bronchia.

BUC-CI-NATOR. [L. _buccinum_, a trumpet.] The name of a muscle of the cheek, so named because used in blowing wind instruments.

BURS MU-COSA. [L. _bursa_, a purse, and _mucosa_, viscous.] Small sacs, containing a viscid fluid, situated about the joints, under tendons.

Cc.u.m. [L.] Blind; the name given to the commencement of the colon.

CALX, CALCIS. [L.] The heel-bone.
