10 SAVAGES (1/2)

Vanessa jumps up when she hears the shot. She gets up and scrambles over Sia without a care for her comfort.

”Agh,” Sia says as a foot tramples her shoulder.

Raymond jumps off the edge of the truck and looks around for Greg. Vanessa hops out and looks back inside.

”Where's Greg?” she hisses at Raymond.

”He went to take a piss and a walk. He's still out there.”

”Dammit.” Vanessa pulls her rifle up and straightens the straps around her shoulder.

Everybody that was resting scrambles to positions. Screaming can be heard at one side of the camp, then another, and another.

Flashlights are pulled out and bullets start flying. Blue Scarf climbs up on the hood of the truck and the light attachment on his rifle illuminates the spaces he is looking at, but not far enough to kill anything far away from him. He turns off the flashlight and hops back off the truck. He can't see them and they can't see him.

He opens the door to the driver compartment and looks through his backpack. He pulls out his night vision goggles and slides them over his head. After closing the door, he pushes the rifle to hang against his back as he crawls underneath the vehicle.

Eli clambers to the generator that is connected to the floodlights. It's a big LOOK AT ME to all the frightening things in the darkness, but they only need a few minutes.

The clock is ticking. It's nearing daybreak, but they need to kill these Savages, break the light connections, and get out of there before the known scavengers overtake them. It'll be impossible to drive through such a mess. They might have to abandon their cargo.

When the light blasts on, the enemy can be seen running out from the shadows in groups of three or four. Wielding rusty scrap metal as weapons, bows and arrows, guns, and flaming bags of...

”Fire!!!” a mercenary yells as he shoots and retreats behind a vehicle.

A poop cocktail hits another mercenary. Several others are thrown at the mirrors of the trucks. The mercenary is blinded and a small flame spreads along his upper body as he is lit on fire. He drops his weapon and begins rolling around the ground to extinguish himself. The Savages don't give him any time to regroup before they come at his rolling body with their weapons.

Other guards that got the heads up have scrambled for cover or backed into camp with their weapons held high. The glare of the lights temporarily blinds them and their opponents. The lights shine on, their opponents momentarily freeze, and the guards fire along the last open spots they saw approaching silhouettes.

”Aaaagh!”

The Savages' arms and shoulders are embedded with bullets. Unfortunately for the Savages, with the field illuminated, the advantage is now fully in their opponents' favor. Turner and Priya pick off multiple people from their locations, and Blue Scarf takes out as many knees as he can see from his vantage point. Their night vision goggles open up a wider field of vision. The Savages farther out in the field are dropping before they can run toward their location.

From the other side of camp, Eli and the mercenaries are doing fine. The few Savages that have slipped into the inner camp are struggling against the others.

Sia is pushed into the back of the cargo truck to hide. Raymond fights a Savage from the entrance and is stabbed in the bicep. He is pushed down to the floor.

Another Savage advances toward the truck to help.

Sia glimpes the approaching figure and mentally yells, 'Now is my chance! Dynamic entrance!'

She charges for the Savage, but stops short when she sees they are pointing a gun at her.

'Gun! Oh my...Noo!'

Sia's consciousness is pushed back into immersive mode.

”Aah. This again,” She looks around for a door to run to.
