-1 Prologue (2/2)
Wyatt sighs and says ”Yes, sir”.
Wyatt finally begins to leave, but his brother Kemal stops him outside. ”You're finally escaping this dump today, huh?” He asks.
”Yeah, finally” Wyatt says. ”This place bums me out, and dad-”.
”I heard” Kemal interrupts. ”He still has a distaste for laibah, but give him time. He'll get over his own prejudice. He doesn't have any real reason to hate them”.
”He still doesn't know, does he?” Wyatt asks. ”You know, our childhood friend that had to move after a couple months of living here. He was laibah”.
”I've never told dad about it” Kemal says, ”because he'd probably pop a vein in his forehead if he knew”.
”Are you sure he'll come around?” Wyatt asks. ”He's always so angry all the time. It's kinda part of the reason being here bums me out. I mean- nothing against dad, except that irrational fear of his, but still”.
”Some people just need time, I guess” Kemal says. ”When we were born, laibah were already allowed to live with humans. But when they were young, they probably fought with the laibah a lot”.
”Yeah, well” Wyatt says, ”I'm not the social type, so I don't really get along with most people anyways. It might just be me, but I think regular humans are shitty anyways”.
”Points of view, Wyatt” Kemal says. ”It's what creates variety. Variety is the spice of life-”.
”And the spice of life is what makes the world go 'round” Wyatt interrupts, ”Yeah, I know. You remind me of that a million times per year”.
”It's a good life lesson and important to remember” Kemal says. Kemal then holds his fist out towards Wyatt for a fist-bump. When Wyatt fist-bumps Kemal, Kemal says ”Take care of yourself, little bro”.
Wyatt laughs and says ”Oh, not you too. Now you're starting to sound like mom and dad”. Wyatt walks away with a heavy heart, due to leaving his family behind. But also with a weight lifted from his shoulders, as he was now free to create his own life however he saw fit. Hopefully one day, he could even help his parents move out of Durley and let Kemal finish school so he could get a better job. This was the start of his journey for a better life, for himself and for his family.
