Yet, when he tried to recall random information he'd learned in the past, he noticed it came to mind faster and clearer.

He thought about the recent classes he took. Although he hadn't attended them in over a week, he remembered the teachings even better now than when he recalled them a week ago. Many details he forgot were now accessible. So you could say that a higher knowledge stat improved his memory, increasing the amount of knowledge accessible by him. The effect wasn't exaggerated, but he noticed the relative difference.
