1 『To New Beginnings I』 (2/2)

”Hey! I didn't mean it!”

”I know you didn't,” Jack snickered at his reaction, his eyes turning his head towards the demon as he came to a halt several paces away from the door.

”I can never tell when you're serious with that stoic expression you always wear on that face of yours.” The devil would laugh as he spoke, pointing at him with a crooked smile.

”Life is always about the reactions of others, isn't it?” Jack cocked his head with a brow raised.

”If you're that obsessed with the eyes of Society, probably…?”

Shrugging, the Leader of the Guild opened the pocket door from where he stood, watching as it shifted aside and revealed a handful of NPC lining the halls leading to the lower elevated floors below.

”Perhaps, perhaps not.” Jack let out a soft chuckle as he scratched the back of his head again, as if it was an automatic gesture her resorted to.

”Anyways, did you get the newest game system I sent you?” Seki asked with chuckle, ”So far you're the only one who hasn't moved your character over to Alterpoint.”

”Alterpoint? Right… That American Game Company that bought some of the rights to YGGDRASIL's database to allow players to convert their characters over to their game.”

Sensing his disinterest, Seki simply stared at his friend with his bright yellow eyes. ”Lala-san said that she would marry your character, should you join.”

Jack simply gave Seki his signature menacing look before shaking his head slightly. ”Whilst I enjoy the idea of coming home from work and there being someone there… I'm not marrying someone in a game world,” pinching his nose despite there being no feeling. ”And it's unlikely she'd settle down so early in her career just to appease me. It would ruin what makes her… her.”

Seki wore this blatant yet feint smile, seeing Jack was making excuses.

Lala was a young successful and skilled international actress slash musician, starring in various televised shows and films, though her primary fanbase is in Japan. Her true name was Tetsuya Megumin, age nineteen.

Jack on the other hand, he lived off of the real estate he inherited from the incidental deaths of pretty much his entire immediate family. He had a doctorates degree in Computer Sciences, which allowed him to program and network the NPCs.

That was about it.

No debt, no problems. His only internet presence was this game, his only social outlet other than the game was his phone, which was only to order food or call for help, but just maybe a friend.

”Well,” the Devil yawned, ”It's about time for me to head out. Hence, I bid you farewell my friend. Until we meet again on Alterpoint, should you ever open the package and plug it in.”

Jack just narrowed his eyes on the Devil and before he could say a word, as his lips parted, a ray of colorful pixels claimed his friend. Seki was gone and Jack was left alone.

”Didn't even take his time,” a shallow smile of contempt appeared over his lips before he turned his gaze towards the table. His eyes resting on the Staff of the Citadel, reaching his hand out and calling it to himself wordlessly.

Spiraling and whirling through the air, the item came to his hand without complication, his entire body giving a faint purple flash before returning to normal. Slowly he took a shaky inhale, looking at the clock. It was 2:50 PM, which in Japan would be 11:50 PM, as they were nine hours ahead.

”Ten minutes until the game comes to an end,” his gaze rested on the weapon in his hand. ”I wonder if Alterpoint will bring this broken weapon over if its in my item box...” Slipping it into his storage, he would proceed to walk out of the Grand Assembly Room.

Above his head as he waltzed through the corridors, were chandeliers with bright blue flames. The walls were dark, scorched into an off-black hue. The floors were covered in a black reflective compound with a blue, gold trimmed, carpet rolled down the center of the corridors.

In all his thoughts, he was hoping that this game wasn't really coming to an end. That it was all just shutting down for a massive update. A change of scenery, a new world.

The adventures he had, the friends he had made. He never had those in the life head lead outside of the World Tree. Nothing but money, he could buy people, yet at the end they'd just leave him once it was spent. His hands balled up as he took gander at the nearest NPC that was lifelessly staring at him.
