Chapter 255 - A Silly Thought (1/2)

That evening, Halia read through all the doc.u.ments and analyzed the way that Morton dealt with Jackson's case. But, she did so while trying to keep a distance. Whenever Morton started walking near her, she would quickly stand up and pretend she needed to go to the toilet. Morton smirked when she did this. He liked shy women.

In the end, Halia concluded that Morton followed all the proper procedures down to the T and nothing seemed suspicious. He even stored Jackson's information in a confidential folder and locked it in a safe instead of taking it home like Roy used to do.

”Did you ever suspect that Roy did what he's accused of?” Halia asked carefully as they began to leave the office.

Morton looked at Halia and shook his head, ”I trusted he was doing the right thing.”

”But, weren't you ever curious how he made so much money?” Halia continued to question.

”I just thought he was good at saving money and investing,” Morton replied. ”I'm sure a lot of people thought that too. Didn't you?”

Halia paused for a second and nodded her head.

As they walked past Roy's office, Morton sighed. The police had raided the office and it was a complete mess. ”I guess this is what happens when a person is too greedy.”

Halia sighed as well.

At that moment, Morton glanced down and noticed a bandaid around Halia's finger. He looked at it in confusion. It was coincidentally on the same finger that Haili Feng cut the previous night.

”Did you hurt your finger?” Morton asked as he pointed to the bandaid with suspicion.

Halia glanced down and almost slapped herself for forgetting about the bandaid. Jackson had distracted her last night and she forgot to remove it.

Thinking quickly on her feet, she immediately tore the bandaid off to reveal a perfectly fine finger. ”I have a habit of using bandaids when I sew things. I had to reattach a loose button this morning,” she laughed.

Morton looked at the finger and laughed to himself. He had almost thought Mars was Haili Feng again. What a silly thought.

...

When Halia returned home that night, Jackson was up waiting for her. He had prepared dinner and it was laid out deliciously on the dining table. It had been a while since she had returned to a home-cooked meal.

”You're certainly a good house husband,” she praised as she walked up to the table and clapped her hands excitedly.

Jackson walked around behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. ”Don't I deserve a reward?” he asked.

Halia chuckled and turned around to face her fiance. ”You've given me so much. I don't know how I can ever make up for it.”

Jackson smiled and looked into Halia's eyes dotingly, ”Let's start with a kiss.”

He then leaned forward and pressed his lips against hers. But, that was when he noticed, Halia still had her fake mustache on, and it tickled the top of his lips. He moved away and laughed, ”I can't believe Sean made you dress up as a man.”

Halia tore off the mustache and punched Jackson playfully on the chest, ”You should thank him. He was trying to protect me.”

”I will definitely give him a generous wedding gift. After all, I'm really happy with the name he gave you as well, Mars...I mean, Mrs. Wu...” Jackson laughed.

Halia blushed, ”We're not married yet...You even called me Wifey earlier.”

Jackson pinched Halia gently on the nose, ”I've already put your name on my will, don't you know what you mean to me?”

Halia looked lovingly at Jackson. She was a little moved by his actions.

”While we're on this topic, I've kept a close eye on Morton. So far, it doesn't look like he's doing anything wrong. But, he's discovered I'm a woman and he asked me to go to work as a woman tomorrow,” Halia explained.

”Didn't he question why you were disguised?” Jackson asked.
