The door was ajar, and I was about to open it when I heard the sound of voices arguing inside. I had never bothered to listen to the squalor of the walls, but this time I chose to stop and look nervously through the tiny crack in the door and listen.
Zhai Meijiao and her mother stood at the side of the door. The two of them were furious for some reason. After a while, they stopped and shouted in a tearful voice.
”Mom, why did dad go through all of this? Why didn't he tell us the truth about being ordered to kill? If that's the case, maybe we won't be facing the death penalty. We will meet him again one day.”
So it was because of this that the two of them were so angry. My body shot forward, and I nearly hit my head on the door. No wonder Zhai Meijie's attitude at the court was different from others. She knew such a big secret, and it turned out that there was someone else who had killed my father.
I had the urge to barge in and find out who the real culprit was, but I knew I wouldn't get anything. I fought back the desire to rise and gritted my teeth to stay the same.
”Stop talking nonsense and tell me. Who told you that?”
After hearing those words, I couldn't help but stuff my ears into the crack of the door. I was so excited that my entire body was trembling uncontrollably.
”No one told me, and I don't know anyone else either. I only learned about it when I heard your conversation with dad when I went to the toilet at night. But mom, dad already went in, so are you still going to fill me up?”
His mother didn't answer and instead scolded him harshly, ”From today onwards, no, right now, this matter will be in your stomach. If you say anything about it, I won't acknowledge you as my daughter.”
”No, I can't do it! I want dad! I want dad to come out!”
As if her mother had heard something outrageous, she slapped her daughter hard on the face. Di Mei covered her face and glared at her mother in disbelief. Then, she quickly walked to the door.
Not good, she might have to go out. I turned around and walked two or three steps to the top floor. In less than a minute, the door opened heavily. Then, she stomped down the stairs.
I didn't meet with Zhai Mei-jie because I felt her mother knew more about the truth. I waited for more than a minute, and when Zhai Mei-jie was almost out of sight, I walked down the stairs and entered without hesitation.
Zhai Meijiao's mother thought that her daughter came back after realizing her mistake. There was kindness in her expression, but there was also surprise. When she saw that it was me, her face was filled with astonishment.
Panicking, she blurted out, ”Why are you here?”
I sneered, ”If you didn't come, how could you have heard such interesting content? It's not easy, just tell us what you know. ”
Zhai Mei-jie's mother might have realized that I had listened to all of their conversation, but she was unwilling. After a moment of panic, she looked at me and sighed.
”You didn't hear it. Actually, we, mother and daughter, had a conflict because of her father.” You didn't hear it, actually, we, mother and daughter, had a conflict because of her father.
I knew Zhai Meijiao's mother wouldn't easily say it out loud, but that didn't mean that there was no way to make her say it, because whoever was being ordered by her would definitely reap huge financial benefits. As long as this balance was broken, things could turn for the better.
