Chapter 18 (1/2)

White Eagle Union was a nation built on a new continent. From the very beginning, the design of the city was based on the lessons learned from the cities on the old continent.
Every city in the union had a huge underground sewer system which ensured efficient drainage. In most old cities, waste water could flow back up to the roads and streets during the rainy season.
However, such a good system still required regular maintenance.
In fact, the section that Shawn was responsible for wasn’t very hard to deal with. If it wasn’t for all the creepy things, there was zero chance of Shawn getting such a job.
“I have to say, Shawn… You really got us a ‘nice’ job!”
In the sewers, Thulhu was wearing a full set of cleaning attire, a pair of rubber boots, and a thick face mask. However, he still almost lost his breath at how overwhelmingly terrible the smell was.
Meanwhile, Shawn had taken off his face mask and started throwing up.
“I swear…” Shawn’s face had turned pale. “No more jobs like this anymore!”
“If you break your word, I’ll punch you in the head!” said Thulhu.
Lifting the light, Thulhu tried to be very careful as he walked around. However, his boots still got very filthy.
The air quality was extremely poor down here, but the cleaners who had come here before had improved the ventilation slightly.
Thulhu shouldered the shovel and went over to where the congestion was very bad. The pile of domestic waste had almost completely blocked off the sewer, and waste water and filth could be seen everywhere.
“Let the work begin!” said Thulhu.
No matter what, one had to treat one’s work seriously.
Thulhu shovelled a big chunk of garbage into the big plastic bag beside him.
“I… I still need some more time here…” said Shawn in a weak voice.
The way Shawn propped himself up against the wall was awkward, which left Thulhu a little speechless.
Thulhu turned to focus on his work. Meanwhile, he was also on full alert, as he was very interested in the creepy tales.
However, at the end of the day, Thulhu saw nothing other than lots of rats and cockroaches.
It seemed that there was no ghost down here at all. Perhaps the cleaner had gotten hurt because of a big rat or snake.
Thulhu was slightly disappointed.
He thought that it would be a chance for him to get closer to the mysterious power. However, it turned out that he had come down here just to clean shit.
Seven gods! He felt like he had been tricked!
Human beings could adapt to a new environment very quickly. Three days later, even Shawn had gotten used to the smell in the sewers. Now, he was shovelling hard.
Once he started working, Shawn always worked hard, which was the reason why Thulhu was still his friend.
“If we keep working like this, we might only need seven or eight days to get the job done!”
Thulhu made the comment when they were taking a break.
“Thanks, bro. I could never have done this without you,” said Shawn sincerely.
Thulhu worked two times harder than other people, and Shawn knew it.
“No worries…” answered Thulhu casually.
In fact, Thulhu totally didn’t see this job as exhausting since he was now a lot stronger.
However, somehow, he started feeling that something wasn’t right about this place.
It was too quiet today…
He finally realized the difference.
The sewers were a paradise for rats. It was their third day working down here, and in the last two days, big rats would jump out all of a sudden from time to time and startle them.
However, they didn’t spot any rats today! That didn’t seem right.
“Shawn, have you noticed that we haven’t seen any rats today yet?”
Thulhu shovelled some garbage into the sack as he asked the question.
“Rats? No… Don’t tell me you like those things. I’d be happy if they’re all dead,” Shawn said gloomily.
Yesterday, a nest of rats dropped right on his head from above, and one rat almost got into his clothes. He still felt beyond disgusted every time he thought about it.
“Alright…”
Thulhu raised his vigilance even further.
Although he hated rats as well, and those filthy creatures didn’t provide him any XP, he still preferred rats to some unknown danger. “We gotta be more careful today.”
