Chapter 19 (1/2)

Chapter 19

The freshman assembly was boring as usual. A few university heads went up on stage to give speeches as the freshmen sweat under the sun.

“It’s so damn hot.” Chen Hansheng muttered.

“Hansheng, what are you complaining about? Why didn’t you say it was hot when you were chatting with the girls earlier?” Yang Shichao seemed bitter.

“That’s right.” Jin Yangming also chimed in. “Hansheng will treat everyone to a glass of sprite for lunch.”

This kid was the most dejected. The girls had been so engrossed chatting with Chen Hansheng, but no one paid attention to his cell phone. He really wanted to show it off, but no one even bothered to look at it.

Finally, the assembly ended and it was time for classes. Professor Guo led his students to the classroom.

The boys started winking at each other because they realized that some of the girls in their class were very good-looking

The girls knew that the boys were checking them out but they pretended not to have noticed. Nevertheless, the slight smile on the corner of their lips and the proud expression on their faces betrayed their inner thoughts.

Shen Youchu was the exception here. She lowered her head and followed behind the girls. It seemed like she really wanted to blend in, but at the same time, she was isolating herself.

When they got to class and took their seat, Chen Hansheng noticed Jin Yangming was missing. “Where’s our youngest?”

“He went to the toilet with his phone.” Dai Zhenyou didn’t sound pleased.

Everyone overestimated Jin Yangming’s ability to be mature. Just as Guo Zhongyun was about to start the first class meeting, Jin Yangming appeared at the door with his phone at his ear as he loudly said, “Hello? Hello? I can’t hear you. Can you speak louder? Forget it, let’s talk after class.”

His actions intentionally caught everyone’s attention. Jin Yangming hung up the phone and apologized to Guo Zhongyun innocently, “Sorry about that, Professor. I had to leave to take the call.”

Guo Zhongyun had his share of experiences dealing with a variety of university students. So he simply nodded and gestured for Jin Yangming to enter the classroom first.

Jin Yangming sat in his seat and complained to Dai Zhenyou angrily, “The signal must be terrible. This phone costs more than seven thousand yuan but it can’t even take a single call.”

Dai Zhenyou was a good friend and supported Jin Yangming.

Chen Hansheng slightly admired Jin Yangming and Dai Zhenyou’s dedication to keep up their act.

Thanks to Jin Yangming, the atmosphere in the class became lively. Guo Zhongyun let out a slight cough to get their attention and began to brief his students about their responsibilities. For example, military training, computer classes, and so on.

Guo Zhongyun never repeated himself. He made his points clear and direct and moved on to the next topic.

This was university after all, where professors only said what needed to be said and waited for no one, unlike high school teachers who were responsible for ensuring that their students fully understood their teachings.

After that, it was time for the students to introduce themselves. This was what everyone had been looking forward to.

“Hello, everyone. My name is Zhang Xiaoxian. I’m from Pengcheng City, Sudong Province.”

Starting from the leftmost seat, everyone took turns to go up to the stage to introduce themselves. The format was similar: “Hello, everyone. I’m XXX, from XXX.”

Some of the girls were confident enough to take off their military training hats to reveal their beautiful faces. If the girls did this, the boys would smile and push each other’s shoulders excitedly.

But none of them piqued Chen Hansheng’s interest as he remained laid back in his seat. It was only when Shen Youchu stepped onto the stage that Chen Hansheng sat up straight and leaned forward slightly, staring at her with bright eyes.

Shen Youchu was different from the other girls. Her face remained hidden under the military training hat and she did not dare to look straight ahead. She spoke with a voice as soft as a mosquito’s. “H-Hi, everyone. My name is Shen Youchu. I’m from Sichuan. Thank you.”

Shen Youchu stuttered despite speaking such a simple sentence. When she was done, her head dipped lower as she descended the stage.
