Chapter 55 - 55 (1/2)
”Mia!” called Lizzie happily when I got into the room.
Her voice still sounded rough and after she said hi she started coughing. I looked around her room in awe, it was immaculate, an unusual event for Lizzie especially when she was sick. The only mess I could see was near the garbage can and that was from used tissues. I raised my eyebrows at her and nodded my head to the housekeeper that was currently in the attached bathroom cleaning up.
”Yes, apparently she's not here just to keep me in bed. She says she wanted to clean my house for something to do. But I think she's bucking for a bonus from Jordan,” Lizzie said sending a glare Mrs. Lichten's way.
Mrs. Lichten returned it without hesitation causing Lizzie to stick her tongue out at her. To her credit, Mrs. Lichten stuck hers out right back and began cussing her out, I'm assuming, in German.
”Hey, ladies,” I said standing up and holding my hands in between them, ”None of that. Lizzie, you need to rest so stop letting her get you all worked up. Let's face it, hon, your house needed a good scrubbing.”
Lizzie began to try to protest which I silenced with a look that apparently was a good imitation of the ones that Reed and Jordan gave because it worked.
”And Mrs. Lichten, thank you for your help if you'd like to go take a break or talk to Jordan, then I'll take over caring for Lizzie,”
Mrs. Lichten gave me a glare yet did as I asked still muttering under her breath the whole way out to the door. The minute the lady was gone, Lizzie laid back on the bed and seemed to sigh with relief, then proceeded to cough once again and blow her nose.
”Ooh, Mia. I don't feel well at all and having to fight with her all day has just been exhausting,” she whined at me.
Lizzie had never been a very good patient and I'm surprised Mrs. Lichten hadn't shackled her to the bed with duct tape across her mouth.
”Well, if you didn't fight with her, you wouldn't be this exhausted,” I explained checking her forehead and holding her hand.
Lizzie gave a mischievous smile. ”Honestly, I think she was quite enjoying it. I know she was muttering and cussing me out. But I could see the twinkle in her little German eye and it helped me get out some of my frustrations over being sick.”
I laughed realizing that they both might have been doing it on purpose just to get a rise out of each other. I shook my head at her despite the smile that was on my face.
”Did you get any rest today at all?”
She nodded picking up the cup of water that was left by the bed and finished the rest of it before continuing.
”Oh yes, Mrs. Lichten yelled at me if I wasn't sleeping when she checked on me. I was not even allowed to pick up my phone when it rang. The only reason I got your phone call was because I'd put it on vibrate so she couldn't hear it.”
”Oh, you're right, Lizzie. She really is a slave driver. How dare she make you sleep, eat, and not be bothered by people demanding your attention. Tisk, tisk.” I said in my most sympathetic, all be it mostly sarcastic, voice.
Lizzie shut up and just glared at me pouting.
I laughed and began telling her all the gossip and paperwork that she had missed out on today. All of which had her laughing and agree it was a good thing she stayed in bed. We were just giggling at Chrissy's latest screw-up when I heard a weird beeping noise echo in the room. I realized it was my new phone when I felt it tickle my hip again and saw there was a text from Reed.
