At the entrance of a newly opened large bathhouse, a familiar man approached me from behind.

「ならば一緒に行くか. 俺が解説してやろう」

この自称『大衆浴場(フロ)マスター』、もしくは『浴場王(フロキング)』を名乗る男は言うだけあって王都の大衆浴場事情にはかなり精通しており、王都に住んでまだ日の浅い俺に『隠れた名湯』と言われる珍しい場所を色々と紹介してくれた.

湯が高温すぎて危険と言われる『地獄の蒸風呂』と呼ばれる隠し間がある『キマイラ湯』や、無数の触手で肌の老廃物を除去する植物『ヒドラプラント』を大量に浴槽に放し「入浴者の破壊と再生を司る」という『ヒドラ湯』にも、この男の案内がなければ訪れることはなかっただろう.

男の説明はいつも少しばかり大袈裟で、実際に行ってみるとそれほどではないのだが、話を盛り上げて楽しませようとしてくれているのはわかる.

とにかく、珍しいスポットには目がない男なのだ.

「ここも何か面白い仕掛けがあるのか？」

「いや. この浴場は造りとしては極めて王道(オーソドックス)だ. 浴槽(ふろ)自体に特筆すべきことはそれほどない……だがそれを補って余りある、王都の歴史的にも画期的なとある特徴がある. そこに触れずして、この浴場は語れないだろうな」

「……へえ？」

この男はやたらと浴場の歴史に詳しく、その成り立ちやら由来やら、俺に会うたびにこと細かに講釈してくれる. 説明が詳しすぎて、中身は半分ほども理解できないのだが.

俺もわからないなりに、楽しく話を聞いている.

「何を隠そう、この新しい浴場はクレイス王国史上初、『半官半民』で造られた大衆浴場なのだ. 長い浴場(フロ)の歴史がある、この王都でさえ初なんだ. 意外だろう？」

「そうなのか」

意外だろうと言われても俺は王都の歴史について知識がないので、そうか、としか言えない.

「まあ、それだけだと、わからないかもしれんがな？　面白いことに、この浴場には国で指定管理されている『特級迷宮遺物』、『湧水の円筒』が収められ、訪れた客がそこから流れ出す水を直に(・・)見ることができるようになっているんだ」

「……直に？」

「ああ. 普通『湧水の円筒』は王都の給水施設の中に収められていて、そこから各施設に水路を通して水を引いている.

だが、基本的に給水施設の周りは厳重に警備され、誰も立ち入れないようになっているんだ.

王都の市民の生活を支える重要施設だし、『湧水の円筒』そのものが世界的に見ても非常に貴重な品だからな. 実際に本物を目にした奴なんてほとんどないんだ」

「そうか」

確か、似たような話を、前にもこの男から聞いた気がする.

王都内に建つ塔のような『給水施設』から出る水は、浴場や飲み水だけでなく、近隣の農業の灌漑用水にも使っているのだと.

本当にクレイス王国の生活の基盤になっているのだと聞いた.

「確か、農業にも使われているんだったか？」

「そうだな. ここクレイス王国は昔から雨があまり降らず、水源となる山も特にないから水にはとても苦労していたらしいが……冒険者たちが『還らずの迷宮』から幾つもの『湧水の円筒』を持ち帰り続けてきたおかげで、今や水に全く困らない、世界でも有数の土地になった.

むしろ、クレイス王国が国として成り立っているのはこの『湧水の円筒』があったからとも言えるな」

「へえ、すごいんだな. その……『水の出る筒』というのは」

「ふふ、だろう？　王都でこんなに『浴場（フロ）』の文化が発展しているのも、そのおかげなんだぜ. おまけに、ここ王都には上水の水路もちゃんと敷かれていて、下水と雨水を分けて地中に排水しているんだ. こんなに水道が発達した街、世界のどこを探しても、他にはないハズだ」
