ミスラ本国より大陸各所の教会に配布された『神託の玉』と呼ばれる魔導具から『教皇アスティラ』の姿が映し出されると、『ミスラ教』の信徒たちは初めて聞く声と、初めて目にする姿に感嘆のため息を漏らした.

信者たちの前に姿を見せた『ミスラ教』の教主アスティラは、彼らが耳にしていた数々の噂の表現をはるかに上回る美しさだった.

まさに神託を受ける『神の器』と呼ばれるに相応しいと信者の全てに思わせ、この世のものとは思えない美しさを体現した姿に誰もが目を奪われた.

「皆、静まれ. 猊下が口を開かれるぞ. 聖なるお言葉を聞き漏らすな」

皆が息を呑んで教皇の次の言葉を待った.

本国の式典に出席経験のあるごく一部の者を除き、信者の殆どがその姿を見たことがなかった. ましてや、声を直に聞いたものなど数える程もいない.

『────皆さん、初めまして.

会場全体に形の良い鐘の音ように心地よく響きわたる声を耳にしながら、信者たちは誰一人口をきかず、『神託の玉』より映し出された教皇の大きな幻影(すがた)にただ見入っていた.

初めて目にする教皇のあまりに神々しい姿と、人の心を掴む温かみのある声色(こわいろ)があらゆる信者の考える力を失わせ、その目と耳の全てを惹きつけた.

「あれが……我らの、教主……さま」

そうして老若男女、幼い子供に至るまで、皆がその口から出る声を一つも聞き逃すまいと懸命に耳を傾ける中、教皇アスティラは静かに言葉を続けた.

『まず……私はひとつ、みなさんに謝らなければならないことがあります. 先日のミスラでの騒ぎを耳にした方はたくさんいらっしゃるでしょう. 大聖堂地下の『嘆きの迷宮』から魔物があふれ、人を襲ったと. それでお分かりの方もいらっしゃると思いますが……それは本来、ありえないことなのです. つまり────『嘆きの迷宮』は今に到るまでずっと踏破されていなかった、ということになります』

突然始まった教皇の話の意図が察しきれず、会場はにわかにざわついた.

「……『嘆きの迷宮』は教主様が踏破され、その上に聖都ミスラが建てられたのではなかったのか……？」

『……私たち『ミスラ教』はもう『魔族』と敵対することをやめにしようと思います. かつて『聖ミスラ』からもたらされたミスラ教の『教え』も、皆さんにとって有益なものを見極め改訂することになるでしょう. もしかしたら、『神聖ミスラ教』という名称も新たにする必要もあるかもしれません.

私たちにはこれから、大きな変化が待ち受けています────ですが、皆さん. ここから、私からひとつ『お願い』があります』

教皇アスティラは会場に集まった信徒達をまっすぐ見つめるようにして言った.

信徒たちに、その願いを受け入れる理由はなかった. 自ら間違いを認めた教主を信じる理屈も、もはや存在しなかった.

だが、どこにも嘘を感じさせない教主の真剣な眼差しに、皆が呑まれ言葉を失った.

「……教主様……」

「猊下」

『だから────できればでいいので、また少しだけ、私を信じていただけると嬉しいです. どうか、これからも私に皆さんが幸せになるためのお手伝いをさせてください』

教皇の真剣さは表情だけでなく声色にも滲み出て、自分たち信徒たちを想う心に感じ入り、地に伏して啜り泣く者も出始めた.

最早、多くの信徒は彼女の言葉を浴びながら、恍惚とさえしていた. 会場に集まった信徒の半数は再び考えることを辞め、教皇の姿と声を追うことに夢中になっていた.

『……私たちの『ミスラ教』は信徒の皆さんがあってこその『教え』です.

信徒たちは考えることを辞めて、教主の次なる言葉を待った.
