6 ACT THREE: Scene 1 (1/2)
Under the mango tree, close to the village market where Sidi sells palm-wine are seated a group of middle-aged men. They are passing the time sipping palm-wine to rest from the day's work. Soon, Karimu appears and almost at the same time, Akanji also surfaces gorgeously dressed. As they settle down a lively discussion ensued.
Agbede: Akanji, you are dressed like a chief today. Anything for us?
Dagunro: That's true. I think we will be doing more rounds today than before. Isn't it?
[Turning to Akanji, who is busy adjusting himself on his seat. He is wearing a Sokoto with Dansiki made of 'Aso Oke' with a perfect Cap - 'abeti-aja' to match. Sidi is also on hand in the euphoria]
Sidi: I will be very happy if that is so. At least, you will be kind enough to pay back all your debt.
[Everybody burst into laughter except Karimu, who is busy looking right and left as if searching for someone.]
Akanii: [Cuts in] Look, Sidi, be careful. Watch your tongue. I have come for something more important than your palm-wine.
Omitoogun: What could be more important to you than palm-wine? What else do you know

[He is saying this when Karimu suddenly stirs up and alerts Akanji of Risi who is passing along. He, in turn, stands up and quickly walks towards her direction. Everybody is surprised and they keep quiet as they watch him approaching the lady. As he gets close to the girl, he called her name and she stops to see who is calling her. They talk together for a short time and later part. They all watch Akanji as he returns and they argue among themselves.]
Onitoogun: She said no!
Karimu: She said yes!
