2 ACT ONE: Scene 1 (1/2)

In a neighborhood of Orogun are two little houses almost facing each other, and very close together with a footpath separating them. One of these belongs to Akanji and the other to Iya Agba, his next– door neighbour. It was ten o 'clock in the morning when Akanji comes out of his house.

Akanji: [Yawning] So, it is morning already

How time flies

[At this juncture, a voice is heard from the backyard of Iya-agba singing]

Voice: Ole o le gbe'lu wa

Ole o le gbe'lu wa

Aago meje l'awa nji

Aago mewa l'ole nji

Ole o le gbe'lu wa

[Akanji is standing at the entrance of his house staring angrily at the direction where the voice is coming from, then Iya – agba emerges from the backyard where she has been busy doing some things. As she sights Akanji, who is looking angrily at her, she greets him.]

Iya – Agba: Good morning Akanji

[Akanji, still staring at her with anger refuses to answer]

Iya – Agba: I am greeting you, good morning

Akanji: [he retorts] Don't greet me!

Look woman, you have started again. I don't want any trouble from you this morning!

Iya-Agba: [Pretending not to understand his feelings] What happened? Have I done anything wrong?

Akani: [cuts in] Shut up! Alabosi! Iya – Aje!
