Chapter 42 - The Kill (1/2)

The sharp snap of the bowstring was the only warning of doom. The arrow glided through the air with a deadly whistle, too fast to react. Spinning and trailing fire, the arrow dug deep into Strikan's ċhėst, engulfing him in flames. He was just coming out of the Savah's house for his daily report. There was nothing left of him but ashes and the name on my hand.
Pulling down my hood, turned to leave my perch on the castle spire. That was when hell broke loose. Behind me, the stone exploded into a shower of shrapnel.
”You son a bitch, get back here!” The voice boomed from below. I had been caught again. Glancing back, Savah was chasing after me, eyes white and malice dripping from every pore of his body. Shit. Quickly, I leaped across the rooftops, hoping to lose him in the maze of houses. It was pointless. Right behind, Savah began to float high into the air, looking down at me with pure rage. It began to rain stones on me.

I finally caught up to Solskin, but a huge commotion broke out. Staring towards the sky, I could recognize Savah floating in the air, tearing away stones from roofs with magic and hurling them down to the ground. He was fighting someone. Shooting Solskin a knowing glance, we began sprinting to the scene.
Weaving through the streets, we began to notice odd things. An increased number of guards. The presence of refugees. The burnt out husks of houses. Something was happening and no one was talking. THe capital had turned into a warzone without us knowing.
Pulling alongside a guard, I quickly began interrogating him. ”What happened?”
”Just some bad fires.”
”Bullshit!” Solskin exclaimed. It looked like he was about to use his sword to get answers.
Hastily, I cut in, ”We work with General Nightrider.”
At that name, the soldier straightened up a little, ”Well, ma'am, a monster has been attacking the town. The mage guild is desperately researching ways to stop it, but half of their library has burned to the ground. We were told to keep things quiet to avoid panic. Much of the witnesses are now bounded by geasses to not talk about it.”
Nodding at the information, I continued to spirit on. Solskin, satisfied, followed. The demons have been active.
