Chapter 144 - Gloom (1/2)
”Please, don't do this, Adam. Please.”
That day glimered and the sun had risen that day to show its magnificent light through the panels of the High Temple, making colorful reflections on the floor.
The doors were adorned with white flowers and the many guests inside were attired with their best clothes. It should a beautiful and festive ambiance but it was nothing but miserable.
The beautiful girl in a white long wedding dress, the one that was to be the bride that day was kneeling before the man she was supposed to marry. The one that was supposed to be her husband.
She did not mind the mocking gazes and the horrible comments from the crowd behind her. She knew they hated her. She knew they thought of her as someone disgusting but she didn't care, only the man in front of her was the one that mattered in her life.
”Please Adam,” her beautiful blue eyes were pleading him with tears but the man only looked at her with coldness and indifference. Nothing more.
That handsome man in a black suit was the one that proposed marriage to her. He took her from her desperate condition and promised to love her all her life. He bowed to the Gods to take care of her and make her happy for the rest of their days. She said yes without thinking much and she was happy at his side even if his people despised her.
However, the same day they were about to marry, he announced that the wedding was canceled.
She was so happy when she walked to the altar, even if some guests didn't like her, even if they despise her, but she didn't care.
However, before the priest could say a word to the man, her fiancé turned around and canceled the ceremony. He didn't give her any explanation nor any gaze of sympathy when she fell down trying to reach for him. His red eyes were cold and indifferent, so different from before.
”Let go,” his face was completely erased from any tender expression. There wasn't anger, but pure indifference and coldness. All those three years together, he had never looked at her that way. His gentle eyes had been the only ones that had accompanied her and brought her happiness.
”At least tell me, why?”
Elian's tears were already threatening to fall, her voice was cracking. She had always been a strong woman, even when her father abandoned her to her luck thirteen years ago. Even when the ones in the orphanage took her in just to let her experience what is a living hell.
However, she never cried before, and she didn't want to, not in front of all that people.
”Do you really think I would marry you?” he said in a mocking tone. ”Do you really think I will sincerely love you?”
It would be a marvelous sight to see his bright smile as he was a handsome man, admired by many ladies. But this time his laugh could only send shivers to even the bravest one.
The whole country knew who he was, the powerful Duke Adam Roin, the one with the most powerful dukedom of the Country of Llor. The Kingdom was in debt with him, he was a powerful noble with the courage to lead the army and troop to the battle.
However, it came as strange news when the man suddenly appeared with a woman in his arms. A lover. He even dared to cancel the engagement with his childhood sweetheart Amanda for the beautiful woman from the north. Elian.
They couldn't deny that she was truly beautiful, almost like a fairy. Her soft long silver hair and blue pale eyes were strange in the land of Llor and many places of the world. However, she was a commoner, a woman without a family and high education.
She was humiliated several times from her lack of knowledge, not even the maids on the Duke's house gave her any respect.
Elian decided no to tell anyone but worked harder to learn the customs of Llor, to be a proper citizen, and a proper wife. Everything was a waste of time now.
”Then… why?”
Her lips were trembling, but she didn't dare to look from his face, she wanted to know why he had gone that far only to marry her and later to ditch her like some trash.
