In February 1987, Swire Group and HSBC sold 12.5% of Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong CITIC Group for HK $2.3 billion. CITIC became the third largest shareholder of Cathay Pacific Airlines, and Rong Zhijian and another senior CITIC joined Cathay Pacific's board of directors.
