David's joke lit up the room like firecrackers on a festival night. Emily appreciated his effort to lighten the mood because she knew that he was doing it for her.

After all, she was the one who had gotten all of them in a tough spot. If she had been more careful, Darren wouldn't have taken the opportunity to steal her child, and they wouldn't have had to face all these troubles right now. Emily's heart and stomach were turning on her, aching in painful pangs of guilt. Although she knew that Jacob was behind her no matter what, she still felt like she owed David an apology.

Without further hesitation, Emily stood up and bowed before David before anyone had the chance to react. The tears fell fast and hard as the sobs wracked her slim body with their force. With her face crumpling in shame, she said, ”I am so sorry, David!”

David rushed to get her back up on her feet and said, ”Emily, please don't apologize to me for that. You and Rita have been friends for as long as I can remember. In my heart, you are family. There's nothing more important in the world than family. Don't ever speak as if I am a stranger.”

”David is right, Emily. We will get through this together. Like a family. Besides, we are all aware that you're already feeling heartbroken. So, don't blame yourself anymore,” Rita added.

They sat Emily down and Jacob took her into his arms once again, patting her back to stop her from breaking down in sorrow.

He hadn't stopped Emily from apologizing to David just because he knew that if she didn't get it off her chest today, she would continue to blame herself.

The fact that everyone showed her sympathy instead of blaming her made Emily want to cry even more. There was a festering sense of regret that tormented her, but crying wasn't going to help solve that problem.
