Part 21 (1/2)
Go home, Kate told him. Thats what Im going to do.
Okay, Tyler said. I guess Ill just say good-night, then.
He turned and left Kate standing with Annie. When he was gone, Annie said, I understand if you dont want to be my friend anymore.
Kate looked at her. Annies hands were pushed into the pockets of her coat, and she was s.h.i.+vering in the cold. Her hair was blowing around, and from time to time she pushed it out of her face before plunging her hand back into her pocket. Every time she did Kate looked at the white bandage wrapped around her finger.
Im really mad at you right now, Kate said. Really mad.
Annie nodded. Im mad at me, too, if that helps any.
It doesnt, Kate said. I just need to be mad.
Annie looked away.
But I wont be mad forever, Kate told her, and Annie looked back at her. Her eyes were wet.
Youre my best friend, Kate, she said. If I could take this back, I would. But I cant.
Kate shook her head. We shouldnt talk about this right now, she said. I need some time to cool off.
