Chapter 10 - X (2/2)

”Brie, I'm seriously not in the mood to listen to you and your boyfriend having sex or whatever you are currently doing so please spare me the details.”

Laia watched to see if anyone overheard what she just said. Fortunately, nobody did as everyone was either too far to hear or preoccupied by something else.

[Oopsie! Jake, I told you to stop for a while, I'm talking to Laia!]

Brie's line went silent for a while and the girl speaks again.

[Sorry about that. Jake's a bit, uhm, impatient. Anyway, can you please tell Ma'am Anne that we both have something important to do and we will probably be coming in during the third or fourth period?]

Sure. Something important.

Brie rolls her eyes. ”Yeah, sure. Just ready an excuse note or something.”

[Is that really needed?! So annoying. I wish I can just drop out already! And no Jakey, I'm not angry at you.]

The girl had to listen to her friend flirt with her boyfriend instead of studying for a few minutes. She knew she would be losing her temper sooner or later, so she decided to interrupt the two.

”If you don't have anything else to say, I'll be going to the flag ceremony,” Right on time with her excuse to drop the call, the school bell rang. ”School bell's ringing. See you if you do decide to go to school. Bye.

Not even waiting for her friend's response, Laia drops the call and pocketed her phone. She then puts back her textbooks and notebooks inside her bag and made her way to the flag ceremony.

Just like any other flag ceremony, even with Brie present, Laia still opted to stay behind everyone else to sneakily read study materials that she downloaded on her phone. You can never be wrong with studying additional reading materials!

Nobody really minded that Laia was reading (not so secretly) on her phone. Just like in the library, everyone was preoccupied with their own issues whether it be somebody calling their friend or checking their Instagram followers.

Fun fact, Laia doesn't have an Instagram account. It may or may not be because she doesn't know how to do boomerangs.

And again, much to everyone else's delight except Laia's, the asshat steps out of his car and walks towards their class as if he wasn't the same asshat who was trance-like last week.

Laia even overheard how the asshat started flirting and complimenting some girls about their hairstyles or their earrings or something else on the lane beside Laia's. And the responses of the girls who were just, well, flirtatious as well.

And since the asshat just can't let Laia take a break, he saunters to where she was currently standing and had the audacity to grin at her in his usual way.

Aka mocking and narcissistic and the-looking-down-at-you-because-you-have-no-money kind of grin.

Laia fought the urge to roll her eyes. She knew that if she did rumors would again circulate that Laia didn't appreciate having a competitor to her top spot or just that Laia hated the asshat.

And she did. Of course, she did, but nobody should know that except that one stray cat that Laia talks to whenever she happens to spot it as she goes home.

”Lopez, are you seriously reading source materials this early in the morning? God, you should take a break!”

To other people the way the asshat talked was casual and probably symphathetic. But to Laia, it was almost as if he mocked her openly for studying instead of checking her social media accounts like the rest of her classmates.

She smiles at him instead of hitting him straight in the face with her phone. ”Yeah, I am. You know, so I won't get humiliated for doing an essay of a completely different topic,”

She heard some of her classmates voice their gasps and outbursts of surprise at her response. Nevertheless, Laia couldn't help herself from having the desire to continue the argument if the asshat would.

And since Laia was still lucky, the asshat was just about to open his mouth and say something when the university's hymn started playing.

Laia snorts. She was about to watch in glee to see if the asshat walks towards the front, as he always does whenever flag ceremony comes around, but to her disappointment and infuriation, the asshat just had to stand behind her.

And had the audacity to whisper, ”Looks like this will be my spot during flag ceremonies starting today.”

Laia decided that she's definitely run out of luck.
