Chapter 30 (2/2)
Zhou Wen was rendered speechless.
Zhou Wen did not expect that the old woman would consent to it so straightforwardly. He was under the assumption that he would need to persuade her with great effort.
It was possible that this was the last resort in a hopeless situation for the old woman.
As long as there was a gleam of hope, even if she obviously knew that it was just a temporary relief or placebo, she was willing to give it a try so that her son could suffer a little less.
The old woman’s relatives were there when they arrived in the ward.
There was an old man with gray hair and three youths.
The elderly man was seated next to the bed taking care of the patient while the rest of the youths were sitting on the chair outside the ward, using their phones. None of them even bothered to take an extra glance at the ward.
There was a saying of ‘no filial son could be found by the bedside of a parent who suffered a long illness,’ let alone relatives.
The old woman and the old man engaged in small talk for a while. Zhou Wen did not understand them much because they were conversing in the local dialect in a swift and rushed manner.
He roughly speculated it to be words of concern and also querying why the old woman did not employ two caretakers to help her out, among other things.
The old woman remained smiling throughout the ordeal, and she would speak occasionally, but her answers would always make the old man heave a sigh.
The old man stayed in the ward for about an hour before the few youths waiting outside grew impatient and urged him to leave.
The two of them spoke for a while longer before they left.
As for Zhou Wen, who had been constantly standing by the side, the old man assumed that Zhou Wen was a doctor because he was dressed in a lab coat with the words ‘First People’s Hospital’ embroidered on his chest. The old man did not speak to him at all throughout the time he was there.
Zhou Wen took a seat in front of the bed and seized the opportunity when the others were not looking to flip over the blanket and pull down Guo Baichun’s hospital pants a little to reveal his buttocks. Then, he injected the Biopharmaceutical into his body.
Zhou Wen noticed a sudden change almost immediately. When an ordinary person was taking an injection, and the needle was pierced into the person’s body, the person’s muscles would contract. Yet, Guo Baichun did not. There was utterly no reaction from his body. It felt as if the needle had pierced into a piece of dead meat.
It was apparent that his physical bodily functions were almost close to having a complete breakdown.
Later, Zhou Wen kept the syringe away properly and waited quietly by the side of the bed.
One minute later, Guo Baichun’s tightly furrowed brows were relaxing at a speed that could be noticed by the naked eye. Even in his sleep, his face was rarely relaxed due to the pain.
The old woman seated next to Zhou Wen could see it too. She asked incredulously, “Is… Is it really effective?”
Frankly, she did not believe it fully in her heart when Zhou Wen told her about the biopharmaceutical drug earlier when they were downstairs.
She was an educated woman, after all. How could she possibly believe that a medicine that was simply made from an ancient formula could be better than an advanced pain killer made using modern sciences?
Just as Zhou Wen had imagined, it was her last resort in a hopeless situation. Her son was already in such a state, how bad would it be if it was a failure anyway?
Moreover, she believed that Zhou Wen would not have the courage to simply administer any medication to her son.
As for the possibility of money swindling, she really did not care much about that.
What was the point of having money when the person was dead?
However, the reality was far more bizarre than her imagination.
She retained a ‘hope for the best’ ideology in her mind, yet Zhou Wen gave her a 100% satisfaction surprise.
“I believe that it’s effective.”
The old woman cried tears of joy. She grabbed Guo Baichun’s hand and called out to him softly, “Wake up… Wake up.”
Guo Baichun opened his eyes slowly and cracked into a smile that his mother had not seen in ages when he saw his old mother next to his bed. He called out ‘mother’ through his cracked lips!
“Oh… How do you feel?”
“Much… Much better…”
“Are you still in pain?”
“Not… Anymore…”
“Are you really not in pain at all?”
“Mmhmm!”
Tears of joy poured out of the old woman’s eyes. She grasped the back of Zhou Wen’s hand tightly with incomparable gratitude seeping out from her warm palm.
Meanwhile, a prompt sound was heard in Zhou Wen’s ears. [The mission’s requirement has been achieved…]
…
Zhou Wen stayed in the ward for over half an hour and ensured that Guo Baichun was not having any other issues before he got up and left. As for the blood test, he decided that he would think about it tomorrow because he did not bring his blood collection needle today.
The old woman got up and sent Zhou Wen to the door.
Zhou Wen passed his number to the old woman and asked her to call him up when the medication’s effect ceased. At the same time, he reminded her not to spread the word on Guo Baichun’s medication.
The old woman understood, naturally. The consequences of producing medication without permission would make Zhou Wen lose his job if the hospital were to find out about it.
She assured him repeatedly that she would never expose this matter.
Upon saying that, the old woman remembered something and took out two bank cards from her pocket. She differentiated them for a moment before she stuffed one of the cards into Zhou Wen’s hand. “Keep this; the password is the first three numbers and last three numbers.”
Zhou Wen was startled and hastily rejected, “Aunty, what are you doing? I said that there’s no need to pay…”
The old woman stuffed it into his hand once again. “Take it. There’s not much money in it… Take this as a small token of appreciation from my son and me.”
Zhou Wen held the old woman’s hands and said, “Aunty, I really can’t take it. I did it because I can see that Uncle Guo was really suffering badly, not because… Please don’t give me money.”
The more Zhou Wen behaved like this, the more insistent the old woman became. “Be good, child. You must take it. This is my only hope; I hope that Uncle Guo can leave this world peacefully and suffer less… You’ve helped me to fulfill it, and I’m really grateful for your…”
As the old woman was speaking, tears streamed down her face once again.
“Aunty…”
“Take it!”
There was nothing Zhou Wen could do. He thought about how he still needed to administer medication to Guo Baichun later so he could only nod and say, “I shall leave first then. I’ll return you the card later.”
“Don’t, don’t… You should get to work. I’ll go to the room now.”
The old woman patted the back of Zhou Wen’s hand again and returned to the ward with tears in her eyes and a smile on her lips…
