The phone rang for a while before it was picked up. The man was as quiet as ever. “Speak?”

“I’m at the hotel entrance. Are you there yet?”

Didn’t he ask me to accompany him to the banquet? Why is he nowhere to be seen?

He paused and said, “Go in first, I’ll be there in a jiffy!”

I winced, hung up, and entered the hotel while holding on to the hem of my dress.
