=Caedmon [k[=a]d'm[o)]n].= ---- c. 680. Anglo-Saxon poet. A monk of Whitby, who wrote about 670 a metrical paraphrase of the Scriptures.
It is accented and alliterative, like all Anglo-Saxon poetry, and marks the beginning of Eng. poetry. _See Thorpe's edition of, London, 1832._
